A single ingredient declaration that can legally conceal thousands of chemical compounds — many of which are known allergens, hormone disruptors, and neurotoxins. If a product contains this word, its full chemical content is unknown.

Found in: Almost everything — laundry, personal care, cleaning products, candles, air fresheners

Parabens

Methylparaben, propylparaben, butylparaben

Preservatives that mimic estrogen in the body. Detected in breast tumor tissue. Absorbed readily through skin and accumulate in tissue with daily use over time.

Found in: Moisturizers, shampoo, conditioner, body wash, makeup

Phthalates

DBP, DEHP, DEP — often hidden in "fragrance"

Plasticizers and fragrance fixatives that are potent endocrine disruptors, linked to reduced testosterone, reproductive harm, and developmental issues. Rarely listed directly — typically hidden within "fragrance."

Sodium Lauryl Sulfate

SLS, SLES

A harsh detergent that strips the skin and scalp of natural oils, disrupts the skin microbiome, and can cause gut microbiome disruption when ingested (as in toothpaste). A known irritant for sensitive individuals.

Found in: Toothpaste, shampoo, body wash, cleaning products

PFAS

Polytetrafluoroethylene, PTFE, GenX chemicals

Forever chemicals that do not break down in the environment or the body. Linked to thyroid disease, immune suppression, and cancer. Increasingly found in makeup labeled as "long-wearing."

Found in: Nonstick cookware, waterproof clothing, food packaging, makeup

Triclosan

Microban, Biofresh

An antimicrobial agent and endocrine disruptor that has been banned from hand soaps in the US but remains in some toothpastes and personal care products. Disrupts thyroid hormone signaling and gut microbiome diversity.

Found in: Some toothpastes, antibacterial soaps, clothing, cutting boards

Formaldehyde-releasers

DMDM Hydantoin, Quaternium-15, Diazolidinyl urea

Preservatives that slowly release formaldehyde — a known human carcinogen — into products over time. Often found in products marketed as "natural." Hair smoothing treatments are particularly high-risk.

Found in: Shampoo, conditioner, body wash, nail polish, hair treatments

PEGs

Polyethylene glycols — numbered (PEG-4, PEG-100, etc.)

Penetration enhancers that increase skin absorption of everything else in a formula — including chemicals you'd rather not absorb more deeply. Often contaminated with 1,4-dioxane, a probable carcinogen, during manufacturing.

Reading Labels

How to read a product
label in 60 seconds.

You don't need a chemistry degree to make better choices. You need a few reliable principles that quickly flag the products worth avoiding.

The beauty and cleaning industry is not required to disclose ingredients fully — but when they do, you can use these rules to make a fast, informed assessment at the shelf.

Look for "fragrance" or "parfum"

If you see this word, the product's full chemical content is unknown. This is an automatic flag — especially for anything applied to skin or used in an enclosed space.

Count the ingredients

Shorter lists are almost always better. A moisturizer with five plant-derived ingredients is almost always safer than one with forty unpronounceable compounds.

Look for the red-flag words

Paraben, sulfate, PEG, triclosan, PFAS, PTFE, quaternium, or DMDM are immediate signals to look for a better alternative.

Trust recognizable ingredients

Jojoba oil, shea butter, vitamin E, aloe vera, citric acid, beeswax — these are ingredients you can verify. If you can't find information on an ingredient, question why it's there.
